the human effect

Is everything a baited hook?
And are there locks on all doors?
If you're looking for an open book,
Look no further, I am yours.

Sookie Stackhouse led a mostly normal life (as normal a life as a telepath in northern Louisiana could manage, anyway) until Bill Compton walked into Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Bill was a vampire, and their meeting pulled her into the whirlwind existence of Supe politics and the world of anti-Supe fanaticism, usually in the form of the radical church known as the Fellowship of the Sun.

Sookie's been attacked by a serial killer and nearly burned alive from the Fellowship for associating with vampires. She was staked in a nightclub while saving a vamp from the same fate. She rescued Bill when he was held hostage and tortured, despite his intentions to leave her for his maker, Lorena, who ended up being the one doing the torturing. (Her relationship with Bill did not survive that particular whoopsie.)

She took care of Eric, the vampire Sheriff of Area 5, when he was cursed by a witch and left with no memory of himself. They had a week of romantic passion before he regained his memories with none of their time together.

She's helped catch a sniper who went after shifters, and almost been killed by a vampire pirate bartender. She's dated a famous weretiger, had an almost heart-to-heart with the vampire Queen of Louisiana, and helped rescue humans and vampires alike from a bombed hotel during a vampire conference.

She's gotten stuck in the middle of a Were war, a Witch war, and more Vampire power struggles than she'd like to remember, and she's getting a little tired of it. Most recently she was caught up in a civil war between fairies, with her great-grandfather Niall (a fairy prince) leading one side. During this war, Sookie was kidnapped and brutally tortured, but rescued by Niall and Bill.

You're an exception to the rule
You're a bonafide rarity
You're all I ever wanted.
Southern girl, could you want me?

Sookie is stubborn, a trait which she shares with her brother, Jason. She's open-minded when it comes to people being "different", perhaps because of her own differences, and she cannot stand to just sit by and watch injustices be committed, as evidenced when she rushes out of Merlotte's to save Bill from Drainers. She also cannot stand back and do nothing when people need her help, like when she stays behind in Rhodes during the hotel bombing to save the sleeping Eric and Pam, only to again go back into the building to use her telepathy to locate survivors.

Family is very important to Sookie, probably because she lost her parents at a young age and she and Jason were raised by their grandmother. At her entry to the game, she is on the outs with Jason because of an incident that led her to being forced to break a friend's hand as a form of punishment, and she has recently lost her cousin (and fairy-godmother) Claudine, while Niall plans to seal off the fairy world and never see Sookie again. With both Gran and her cousin Hadley dead, this leaves her only other relative in the form of a four-year-old boy named Hunter, Hadley's son, who is also telepathic.

Sookie feels very guilty when people she cares about are hurt protecting her, but at the same time she is angry that she needs that protection at all. She is confused by the blood-bond she shares with Eric, often considering what would have happened if she had made the other choice and whether things would have turned out better for everyone. She has admitted that she cares for Eric, but is uncertain whether her feelings are really her own, or a reflection of the bond and Eric's own feelings, which she doubts on a regular basis.

So come outside and walk with me
We'll try each other on to see if we fit
And with our roots become a tree
To shade what we make under it.

Cannon / Type: Southern Vampire Mysteries; book series by Charlaine Harris
Cannon Point of Entry: Directly following the ninth book in the series, Dead and Gone.

Appearance: Long blonde hair. Blue eyes. Tanned. Considered "well-endowed" by Merlotte's patrons. Wears a size 8 on a good day. Has simple clothing style, as most of her wardrobe was purchased at Wal-Mart.

Personal Inventory: Cranberry coat (given to her by Eric), red cellphone (also from Eric), framed photograph of her and Gran, assortment of clothing and shoes (including Merlotte's uniforms and Fangtasia t-shirt), silver and blue dress she wore in Rhodes, her grandfather's iron trowel, the outtake of Eric's Mr. January photoshoot, topaz earrings given to her by Bill, ugly quilt from her couch
